At Birch Dentistry, our goal is to provide safe, high-quality, and conservative dental care for patients in Issaquah, WA and the Greater Seattle area. In certain complex dental cases, the best and safest care may involve a referral to a dental specialist with advanced training and specialized equipment.
Why a Referral to a Dental Specialist May Be Necessary
As a trusted family dentist in Issaquah, we may recommend a specialist for procedures such as:
- Wisdom teeth removal (oral surgery)
- Root canal retreatment or failed root canals
- Sinus lift procedures
- Gum disease and recession
- Advanced orthodontic issues
Depending on your needs, we may refer you to an experienced oral surgeon, endodontist, or periodontist serving Issaquah, Bellevue, Redmond, Sammamish, or Seattle.
Under U.S. healthcare regulations, general dentists are required to refer patients to specialists when a procedure can be completed more efficiently, with higher quality, and fewer complications due to the specialist's additional education, clinical experience, and advanced technology.
We always act in your best medical interest.
Our Relationship With Dental Specialists
- We do not control specialists' office policies, treatment plans, fees, or scheduling.
- We do not receive referral fees or compensation of any kind.
- Each specialist operates as an independent dental provider within the Issaquah/Seattle dental community.
What to Expect When You Are Referred to a Specialist
1. The First Appointment Is a Consultation
Your initial visit is a paid diagnostic consultation, not treatment. Same-day treatment may be offered, but this is not common.
2. Treatment Cannot Be Scheduled Without an Exam
Specialists require an exam before scheduling treatment. When asking about pricing, please confirm whether the quote is for:
- The consultation only, or
- The actual dental procedure
In the Issaquah–Seattle area, specialist consultations often cost around $350, depending on the provider.
3. CBCT Scans May Need to Be Repeated
A CBCT (3D dental scan) from our Issaquah office may not always open or provide the detail required by the specialist. If needed, a new CBCT scan may be taken at the specialist's office and is typically not free.
4. Dental Insurance Network Status Can Change
We do not have real-time access to which specialists are currently in-network with your dental insurance in the Seattle area.
If insurance coverage is essential, we recommend checking directly on your insurance provider's website.
If we have not previously worked with a specialist, we cannot guarantee that their treatment approach aligns with ours.
5. Insurance Estimates Are Never Guaranteed
Until your insurance processes the claim:
- We cannot know the exact amount covered
- You should be prepared for out-of-pocket costs, potentially up to the full treatment fee
6. Important Instructions for Root Canal Appointments
If you are seeing an endodontist in Issaquah or Seattle:
- Do NOT take pain medication before your appointment
- Continue all regular medications
- Eat normally
Pain medication can interfere with accurate diagnosis.
7. Please Cancel Appointments in Advance
If you decide to:
- See a different specialist, or
- Postpone treatment
Please cancel your appointment in advance. You may need this office again in the future.
Strong patient-provider relationships are built on mutual respect.
