If you received a custom night guard at Birch Dentistry in Issaquah, WA, proper use and cleaning are essential to protect your teeth from grinding (bruxism) and clenching.
Custom night guards help prevent:
• Tooth wear
• Cracked or fractured teeth
• Failed dental restorations (fillings, crowns, veneers)
• Jaw pain and TMJ discomfort
• Morning headaches caused by teeth grinding
Wearing and maintaining your appliance correctly will extend its lifespan and protect your oral health.
Proper Use of Your Custom Night Guard
Consistency is critical. A night guard can only protect your teeth if worn nightly.
Wear your night guard every night. If adjustment is difficult, begin with a few hours daily and gradually increase to full-night wear. Rinse with water before placing it in your mouth. Do not wrap it in a napkin or paper towel, as it may be accidentally discarded. Keep it away from pets.
Bring your night guard to your dental visits at our Issaquah dental office, especially if you are receiving fillings, crowns, or other restorative treatment. We will evaluate the fit and monitor wear during routine exams.
How to Insert an Upper Night Guard
Rinse with water before placing it in your mouth. Position the guard over your front teeth first. Using your fingers, gently press it upward and backward into place. Do not bite it into position, as this may distort the appliance over time.
How to Remove Your Night Guard Safely
Use your fingers only. Place your fingers on the outside (cheek side) of the back molar areas and gently pull downward on both sides at the same time. Once loosened, guide it forward and remove. Do not twist, bend, or pull from one side only. Uneven force may cause long-term distortion.
If Your Night Guard Feels Tight
Mild tightness during the first few days or after an extended break is normal as your teeth and jaw muscles adjust.
If the appliance feels excessively tight, briefly soak it in very warm (not boiling) water. The water should feel comfortably warm to your hand, never hot. After slight cooling, reinsert. Do not use boiling water or prolonged soaking, as excessive heat may warp the material.
If tightness persists or causes pain, contact Birch Dentistry for evaluation.
Daily Cleaning Instructions
Daily cleaning prevents bacteria buildup and extends the life of your custom night guard.
Rinse immediately after removal. Gently brush with a soft or very-soft toothbrush using mild liquid dish soap and lukewarm water. Rinse thoroughly and allow it to dry completely before storing.
Do not use toothpaste, mouthwash, denture cleaners, or alcohol-based products, as these may damage the material.
Allow the guard to air dry on a clean surface for approximately 20–30 minutes before placing it in its protective case.
Deep Cleaning (Weekly or Monthly)
Deep cleaning is recommended at least once per month; weekly cleaning is ideal for patients with heavy bruxism.
Step 1: Soak in distilled white vinegar (glass container only) for 30 minutes.
Step 2: Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.
Step 3: Soak in hydrogen peroxide for 30 minutes.
Step 4: Rinse thoroughly and allow to dry completely before storing.
Do not soak longer than instructed. Extended soaking can damage the material. An ultrasonic cleaner may also be used for routine maintenance.
Night Guard Case Care
Wash the case every few days with mild liquid soap, rinse thoroughly, and allow it to dry completely before placing the appliance inside. A clean case prevents bacterial growth.
